EN standards
The European standards that fix lighting levels, seat dimensions, storage loads and fire classes for interior work, with the numbers from each standard.
European standards (EN) are drafted by CEN technical committees and published by the national standards bodies, so a designer in Munich, Marseille or Malaga reads the same figures. Four of those standards decide what an interior must deliver. EN 12464-1:2021 sets the maintained illuminance, glare limit, uniformity and colour rendering for every indoor task area, from 100 lx in a corridor to 1000 lx for fine inspection. EN 1335-1:2020 defines four office chair types with seat height ranges from 400 mm to 540 mm and the armrest, backrest and seat depth dimensions that go with them. EN 14749 sets the safety, strength and stability requirements for domestic and kitchen storage units, including the shelf loads a wall cupboard must hold. EN 13501-1 classifies the reaction to fire of every wall, ceiling and floor finish into classes A1 to F with smoke and droplet sub-classes.
Each article in this section quotes the standard by number, part and edition, reproduces the tables a specifier needs, and notes where a national annex or a building regulation adds a stricter figure. Standards are sold by the national bodies rather than published free, so the articles cite the official abstracts and licensed copies used and identify the edition every number belongs to.
